While so simple to make, there is nothing like homemade croutons, especially when served up in your favorite salad or soup recipe.

I love loaded-up salads like my Green Goddessor my Lemon Chicken Chopped salad where I can add as many things to it as I want, especially these croutons.

Croutons

Croutons are one of the easiest things to make and are a fantastic ingredient to help take your salad, or whatever you want to serve it with, to the next level. They come from the word crouté, which means crust in French, and obviously they are crunchy, so it makes perfect sense.

My inclination into the history tells me that people, I’m guessing Italian, would use old crusty bread and use it as a garnish into a salad like a Panzanella, or even a soup such as Ribollita.

What Kind of Bread to Use

You can use just about any bread out there that you would like, and here are some of my recommendations:

  • Baguette
  • French
  • White
  • Italian
  • Artisan
  • Sourdough

How to Make Croutons

Follow these easy instructions for how to make this tasty recipe:

Cut the bread into bite-size pieces, roughly ½” by ½”.

Add them to a bowl and season them with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil.

Additional Spices to Add to Them

While my recipe is simply olive oil, salt, pepper, and bread, there are a number of dried spices you can add to the croutons to elevate the flavor. Here are a few things you could add in addition to oil, salt, and pepper:

  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Thyme

Make-Ahead and Storage

Make-Ahead: You can make these up to 3 days ahead of time. Make sure they are covered and stored properly before serving.

How to Store: Keep in an airtight plastic container or bag and keep at room temperature for up to 7 days.

chef notes + tips

  • You can also cook the croutons in a pan. Instead of tossing them in olive oil, you add it to a pan and cook the bread in the oil until browned and crunchy.
  • You can also replace the olive oil with melted unsalted butter.
  • The most classic recipe this would go well in is a Ceaser salad

What to Serve Them With

  • Mandarin Orange Salad
  • Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad
  • Summer Panzanella
  • Tuscan Bean Soup
  • Mulligatawny

This recipe is so simple, yet so delicious. These are not even in the same league as pre made croutons from the supermarket. In addition to a salad topping, we make these as a crunchy snack.

How do you keep homemade croutons crispy? ›

The key to crispy croutons is making sure that they're fully dried out in the oven and crunchy all the way through. They should not be chewy when they come out of the oven. Bake croutons in a single layer on the baking sheet to crisp up the bread, rather than steaming it. Why are my homemade croutons soggy?

How long will homemade croutons last? ›

The expected shelf-life for homemade croutons is about two weeks. Moisture encourages mold, so make sure your croutons are completely dehydrated during the bake and let cool completely at room temperature before storing them away in an airtight container.

Why are my croutons not crispy? ›

            Crowding the pan.

Pile the bread cubes on top of each other and they won't have enough space to crisp up and brown. Instead, make sure they're in a even layer.

What are croutons traditionally made of? ›

Nearly any type of bread—in a loaf or pre-sliced, with or without crust—may be used to make croutons. Dry or stale bread or leftover bread is usually used instead of fresh bread.

How do you keep homemade croutons from getting soggy? ›

Cool a batch of homemade croutons before you store them.

If you toss warm croutons into a storage bag, the bag traps moisture and you'll be left with soggy croutons! To avoid a mushy mess, spread the croutons in a single layer and cool them completely. If you're storing store-bought croutons, you can skip this step.

Why are my croutons soggy? ›

If you're baking your croutons, make sure they are well-spaced-out on a shallow tray to ensure they crisp evenly and they don't steam, causing them to become soggy. They also need to be in a single layer and not touching. If you're frying the croutons, toss the pan regularly to make sure they crisp evenly.

Why do croutons not go bad? ›

Croutons don't expire in the sense that they become dangerous to eat. There simply isn't enough moisture in them to feed an spoilage bacteria and other such organisms.

How do you refresh croutons? ›

Let croutons cool in a single layer on the baking sheet. Use immediately or keep in an airtight container for up to 2 days. To refresh stale croutons, bake for 3 to 4 minutes at 400 degrees.

How long do dried croutons last? ›

Croutons do, in fact, go bad. However, because they are toasted pieces of bread with no moisture, they will last for 8 to 10 months if wrapped and stored tightly. The package will not last longer than a month once it is opened. If you want to create your own fresh croutons, they will last no more than two weeks.”
