This Candied Twisted Bacon Recipe is about to become your new breakfast best friend. If you think bacon is delicious then I’m about to show you how to make bacon even more delicious. I know it’s hard to believe it’s possible but it’s true.

Candied twisted bacon is exactly what it sounds like. Bacon that has been twisted, sprinkled with a sugar mixture that becomes candied in the oven when baked.

I gave up on frying my bacon in a pan a long time ago and started cooking bacon in the oven. It’s easy to do, cuts down on the mess to clean and I can cook all my bacon at one time. No more frying half a package at a time in a pan.

A while ago the local news stationed had a story about twisted bacon. I thought….what? Twisted bacon?

The news story claimed twisting the bacon made it taste even better so I figured it was worth a try. What could go wrong? In the end you still have delicious bacon.

Twisted bacon takes a few extra minutes of work. Before you cook it the bacon is twisted and then baked. This is supposed to make the bacon taste more delicious. The bacon comes out crispy on the outside and a bit chewy on the inside. Delicious.

But the news story was wrong. I’ve got something even more delicious than twisted bacon!

How about candied twisted bacon?

Ingredients for Candied Twisted Bacon:

  • Bacon – you can use your favorite brand. I would suggest not using a thick cut bacon. It’s more difficult to twist and tends to untwist itself while baking.
  • Brown sugar – The brown sugar crystalizes when baked making the bacon candied.
  • Dry mustard – Adds flavor to the bacon.
  • Ground cinnamon and nutmeg – Just a bit tastes delicious on the bacon.
  • Cayenne pepper – Just a small amount to add a bit of heat to the candied bacon.

How to make Candied Twisted Bacon:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place a baking rack on a rimmed baking sheet that has been lined with aluminum foil. This will help to keep the bacon out of the melted bacon grease and allow the pieces to become extra crispy.

I like to cover my baking sheet with a bit of foil. This helps to make the clean up a bit easier.

In a mixing bowl blend together the brown sugar, dry mustard, cinnamon, nutmeg and, if you desire, cayenne. How much cayenne you use is up to you. 1/4 of a teaspoon gives the bacon a hint of heat. If you don’t mind the flavor or the heat then increase it to 1/2 teaspoon.

Place the mixed bacon topping ingredients on a large plate or a dish that is wide enough to allow you to place a strip of bacon in it without it being bunched up.

Take a slice of bacon, hold one end in each hand, and begin to twist the bacon. Place the rolled piece of bacon twists in the brown sugar mixture and turn to coat it.

Place your rolled bacon on the baking rack making sure to keep them rolled up. Be sure to space them so the pieces aren’t touching. As they cook the brown sugar mixture will caramelize and the pieces will stick together if they are touching.

Bake for 25 minutes. Check the color of your bacon. Everyone likes bacon cooked to a different level of doneness and every oven cooks a bit differently. This is the type of recipe that you want to check after the initial cooking time as you may need to cook it a bit longer.

The finished bacon should look browned and crispy. If your bacon needs to cook for a bit longer leave it for another 5 minutes. Check the bacon every 5 minutes until it is looking browned and crispy. You don’t want to over cook it as the brown sugar mixture can begin to burn.

What kind of bacon should I use for Twisted Bacon:

You will find regular cut or thick cut bacon at the grocery store. After making several attempts with thick cut bacon I found that the ends begin to unroll while they are cooking due to how thick they are. In order to keep that from happening I secured the ends with a toothpick (see the picture above). This kept them from unrolling at the ends and allowed the bacon to become evenly crisp. The regular cut bacon was much easier to roll up and kept its rolled shape without needing toothpicks to keep them from unrolling.

How to store leftover candied twisted bacon:

Leftover bacon? What’s that?

Seriously I don’t think we have ever had leftover bacon. But, should you make more bacon than you and your family can eat you can store the leftover bacon in a storage bag or airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.

As the bacon is coated with a bit of brown sugar if you reheat it in the microwave it will not be as crispy as it was when it was first made. The best way to reheat the bacon is in the oven (try 350 degrees F for 5 minutes) or in an air fryer (try 350 degrees F for 2 to 3 minutes). You’ll want to keep an eye on your bacon as the candied coating can get over cooked.

If your bacon isn’t warm enough using the oven or air fryer continue to heat it for another couple of minutes until it reaches your desired level of doneness.
