Apple Fritters Recipe (2)

As I was peeling my Granny Smith apples to make these, I told my son Sam how I enjoyed watching my Great Granddaddy Joe peel apples when I was a little girl. He and my Great Grandmother would have just picked the apples he was about to peel. With his pocket knife in hand, he’d begin to peel. He’d always ask if we thought he could peel the apple in one long ring. It was always a treat to watch him in anticipation, knowing he’d never missed this trick in all the other times we’d watched him. The perfect, bouncy ring of apple peeling always seemed magical to my young eyes.

As I finished telling Sammy story, I passed him the nearly complete ring I’d peeled from our Granny Smith apples. I laughed and told him, “I should have watched Granddaddy Joe one more time to make sure I could do it every time, shouldn’t I?”

How to Make Apple Fritters

Ingredients for Fritters

To make these delicious fritters, you’ll need:

  • Granny Smith apples – tart apples taste best with sweet fritter and glaze
  • All-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Apple Pie Spice
  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Apple Cider – or can use apple cider from store
  • Vanilla – or can use pure vanilla extract from the store
  • Peanut Oil

Ingredients for Glaze:

For the glaze, you’ll need:

  • Confectioner’s sugar
  • Milk
  • Apple Cider – or store bought apple cider

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Prep. To make these, start by lining a rimmed baking sheet with paper towels for draining the freshly cooked fritters. Set aside.
  2. Mix. Whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and apple pie spice in medium bowl. Add diced apples and toss in the flour mixture. Whisk together milk, eggs, vanilla in a 2 cup measuring cup. Then stir carefully into the flour mixture with a rubber spatula just until combined.
  3. Cook. Pour oil into a deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat and heat to 350 degrees. Using two tablespoons, scoop 5 or 6 scoops of batter into the heated oil. Cook for about 3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
  4. Place on baking sheet. Remove from Dutch oven with a slotted spoon and place on lined baking sheet to drain.
  5. Make the Glaze. Whisk together confectioner’s sugar, milk and apple cider until smooth.
  6. Drizzle. Drizzle about 1 teaspoon of glaze over each apple fritter and allow to rest about 8 to 10 minutes.
  7. Serve. Serve the cooled and glazed apple fritters and enjoy!
